73% of online adults now use social networking
December 29, 2013/
The Pew Research Center’s Internet Project has just released a new report on social networking site usage and adoption. Read the full report here.
While Facebook is still the dominant platform, people of all ages are diversifying onto other platforms. But, contrary to an erroneous viral rumor that spread recently, they are not leaving Facebook.
Some of the key findings on social networking site usage and adoption are as follows:
- 71% of online adults are now Facebook users (up from 67% as of late 2012)
- 42% of online adults now use multiple social networking sites. For those who use only one social networking site, Facebook is typically the platform of choice.
- Pinterest holds particular appeal to female users (women are four times as likely as men to be Pinterest users)
- LinkedIn is especially popular among college graduates and in higher income households
- Twitter and Instagram have particular appeal to younger adults, urban dwellers, and non-whites. And there is substantial overlap between Twitter and Instagram user bases.
- Facebook and Instagram exhibit especially high levels of user engagement: A majority of users on these sites check in to them on a daily basis
