If you’re anything like me, you likely have a million things to think about on any given day.
One of those things is trying to identify and solve problems. That’s where the five whys method comes in.
This problem-solving technique can help you quickly get to the root cause of a problem so that you can find a lasting solution. It involves asking “why” five times. For example, if you’re trying to figure out why your website isn’t getting any traffic, you might ask the following questions:
Why doesn’t my website have any traffic?
Because no one knows it exists.
Why doesn’t anyone know it exists?
Because it isn’t being promoted.
Why isn’t it being promoted?
Because we don’t have a budget for marketing.
Why don’t we have a budget for marketing?
Because are sales are down
Why are our sales down?
And so on until you get to the root cause of the problem. Once you’ve identified the root cause, you can start working on finding a solution.
So it turns out your 3-year-old niece was onto something when she constantly asked “why” after every statement you made. Asking “why” can help you get to the root of a problem and find a lasting solution. The next time you’re trying to figure out why something is happening in your business, give the five whys method a try. You might be surprised at how effective it is.
