Fresh Squeezed 001: The Essentials

Welcome to the first issue of my Fresh Squeezed newsletter!

Is it January yet?! If your inbox is anything like mine, it is likely filled with tips for making the most of what’s left of 2020 to finish strong. Q4 is my busiest time of year. In addition to all of the usual end-of-year things I anticipate, clients hit me with all sorts of unexpected and urgent things. So I’m just trying to get through it while planning for a more intentional 2021.

I have long struggled with trying to do too much… Always coming through for my clients, partners, family, etc., but often letting myself down because something always has to give. It’s what led me to the concept of essentialism — how to accomplish more by doing less.

I’ve had to postpone the launch of my course The Smartist Way to Q1 2021 because I have been overloaded with client work. Reality is, the only way this is going to happen is if I make it happen — through consistent action. There is never going to be a big opening where I can make this my sole focus. That simply is not realistic.

I’m approaching this with a 3-year vision, a 1-year goal, and planning in 90-day increments. What I seem to really struggle with is being realistic about what I can accomplish in 90 days while also supporting clients and the multiple brands that I own.

The Essentials

90-Day Planning

A 90-day plan helps curb overwhelm by stopping you from focusing on all your goals for the year at once. Instead, you are focusing on fewer things so you are better able to stay on track.

Look at your overall goals for the next 12 months. List out the tasks required to accomplish these goals — not the nitty gritty details — just the high level stuff. Determine which of these you want to focus on over the next 90 days. Be realistic. Break these down into 30-day stretches. Then break those down into weekly. From your weekly task lists, you should be able to define your daily tasks.

Measure output not outcomes

Are you actually doing the work that will lead to the desired outcomes? If you are, the results will come (lag indicator). By focusing your weekly goals on your outputs (lead indicators), which are 100% in your control — you are more likely to improve your results.
