When there are too many options, we tend to choose none.
Too many options can be overwhelming, and when we’re overwhelmed, we’re less likely to make a decision at all. This is the paradox of choice.
Simplify your offer and your message. Less is almost always more. The less choice you give people, the easier and more likely it is for them to take action.
In this insightful and entertaining TED talk on the Paradox of Choice, Barry Schwartz shares how there can be too much choice; when there is, consumers are less likely to buy anything at all, and if they do buy, they are less satisfied with their selection. “Everyone needs a fishbowl. If you shatter this fishbowl so that everything is possible, you decrease satisfaction, you increase paralysis, and you decrease satisfaction.”
