When it comes to branding, every interaction, no matter how small, has an impact. This is because each interaction is an opportunity to make a good or bad impression. For example, if someone visits your website and clicks on a link that leads to a 404 page not found error, this sends a message to them that your website is not well-maintained or organized. On the other hand, if someone visits your website and finds that the layout is easy to navigate and all of the links work properly, this makes a positive impression.
Everyone makes mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes and nobody is perfect, but it’s how we handle the mistakes that matter. A 404 page not found error message can be turned into a branding opportunity. Use it to guide your visitors in the right direction. It’s also an opportunity to show us what you are made of — your personality.
Well defined moments build brands
Think about it — your lost visitors are in a time crunch. They have limited time to figure out where they are and where they should go. Don’t let them leave frustrated or guessing.
Little things, done right, matter. They can tell your story, build your brand, and leave a lasting impression on your audience. Every brand is made up of a series of stories that define them, build them, and make them who they are today. So make sure you define those moments, as they define you.
In this fun TED Talk, Renny Gleeson shares some fun examples about a page not found and reminds us how every error is really a chance to build a better relationship. Enjoy.
